For 2012, the number of trims/packages available has grown with the addition of the Premier Plus and Platinum packages. They join the base 3.2 and performance-oriented R-Design models and add adaptive xenon headlights, a 650-watt, 12-speaker Dolby Pro Logic II premium stereo and navigation system with backup camera. Unfortunately for V-8 lovers, the 4.4-liter V-8 has been dropped in the name of efficiency. The XC90 is the larger version of the compact XC60 and competes with the Acura MDX and Volkswagen Touareg.

All 2012 XC90 models now run on a 240-horsepower, 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine and feature a six-speed automatic transmission with clutchless-manual mode. Choose between front- or all-wheel drive and for a more responsive ride. The R-Design’s sport tuned suspension provides stiffer anti-roll bars that help keep the XC90 flat through hard turns, while firmer shocks improve body control. Fuel estimates for the XC90 are 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The exterior of the 2012 Volvo XC90 is smoother than the box-like approach of earlier models and comes with standard front fog lights, power-operated heated mirrors, power moonroof, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Headlight washers, bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with swiveling lenses, and 20-inch alloy wheels are optional. The R-Design features chrome-plated sport tailpipes, front skid plate and bumper bar, five-spoke19-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, rear skid plate, and a rear spoiler.

Seat up to seven in three rows that, which can fold down to reveal 85.1 cubic-feet of cargo volume. Leather seats, Bluetooth® audio streaming, HD Radio, USB and iPod interface, and automatic dual-zone climate control are standard, while aluminum trim, heated front seats, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, and navigation system with real-time traffic alerts are optional. Sport pedals and sport bucket seats come in the R-Design.

Drive at ease knowing that the 2012 Volvo XC90 is, well, a Volvo. A full suite of airbags, antilock brakes with brake assist, an electronic stability system and traction control come standard. An integrated center child booster cushion in the second row and the Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) are also standard. If you find yourself flipping over, the standard rollover protection system activates door-mounted inflatable curtains and safety belt pre-tensioners. A blind spot warning system is optional.
