The largest crossover in Kia’s lineup, the 2012 Kia Sorento is back with a new four-cylinder engine option to go along with seating for up to seven passengers across three rows.

That new engine is a 191-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder that joins the existing four-cylinder and V-6 from the previous year to give you more flexibility in choosing the Sorento that fits your needs.

From the outside, it’s easy to see why the Sorento is one of the most stylish crossovers in its segment sharing design cues with the Optima and Sportage. Seventeen-inch wheels come standard, while other exterior features like a rear spoiler, fog lights, and eighteen-inch alloy wheels are optional.

Under the hood of the 2012 Sorento, the new four-cylinder is joined by two other engine options: a standard 175-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder and an available 276-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 if you need a little more oomph. For those who drive to the snow or in inclement weather, an all-wheel drive system is optional.

Fuel economy ratings vary between 18-22 mpg in the city and 24-32 mpg on the highway, depending on your choice of engine and front- or all-wheel drive. The highest numbers come with the least powerful four-cylinder, while opting for the V-6 will net you an appreciable dip in fuel efficiency.

Moving to the interior, the Sorento’s second and third rows (when equipped) fold flat into the floor which creates a nice, large cargo area. Even the base model Sorento comes well equipped, as standard equipment includes air conditioning, steering wheel mounted audio/Bluetooth® controls, Bluetooth® connectivity, satellite radio, and a USB/iPod connection. Further options include a navigation system, Kia’s UVO infotainment system, automatic climate control, and push button start.

The 2012 Sorento also scores points when it comes to safety, as it was named a 2011 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. Standard safety features include six airbags, active front head restraints, antilock brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability system. A rear view camera is optional and allows you to back up comfortably.
