Engine options for the Tucson include a 165-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 146 pounds-feet of torque and a more powerful, 176-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 168 pounds-feet of torque. The Tucson comes standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available for the GLS and Limited trims. You’ll get either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel disc brakes are a standard feature.
Fuel economy numbers improve in 2012 for the Tucson. They clock in at 20-23 mpg in the city and 27-32 mpg highway depending on your drivetrain choices. Changes for 2012 include low-rolling-resistance tires and a new “Active Eco System” that modulates throttle response for more efficient driving.
For 2012, the Tucson’s body design remains mostly the same and it is still arguably the most stylish car in the compact SUV segment. All trims come standard with a body-color rear spoiler and remote keyless entry. Upgrading to a Limited trim of the Tucson will get you chrome door handles, silver roof side rails, automatic headlights, and front fog lights. A panoramic sunroof is optional.
One new interior feature for 2012 is an improved air-conditioning system. Standard features include power windows and locks, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The interior can be further spruced up by springing for options like heated front seats, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, Bluetooth® connectivity, a touch-screen navigation system, and a rearview camera.
You’ll find six-standard airbags and rollover sensors in all trims of the Tucson, which is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Other security features include stability control, traction control, downhill brake control, and hill-start assist control.
With a base price under $20,000 and good fuel efficiency, the 2012 Hyundai Tucson is a solid all-around compact crossover that won’t break budgets.
