When you check under the hood, you’ll notice that the engine has been improved as well.  A 372-horsepower (improvement of 22 hp), 4.2-liter V-8 is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and can rocket from zero to 60 mph in under 5.7 seconds – plenty nimble for a full-size sedan.  Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive is standard and the 2011 A8 has improved efficiency, receiving an estimated 17-mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway (a 15 percent improvement from 2010).  For a custom handling experience, the A8 allows the driver to select different driving modes that adjust the engine, transmission, steering and suspension.  Those modes are: Comfort, Dynamic, Auto, and the all-new Individual which allows the driver to customize their preferences.  Competition in the full-size luxury sedan segment includes the Jaguar XJ, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and BMW 7 Series.

On the inside, the 2011 Audi A8 seats five and is full of high-tech gadgetry and refinement.  One major change is the gear selector, which is now a shift-by-wire handle on the center console.  Improved menus and a touchpad that recognizes handwriting are new to the standard navigation system and highlight Audi’s Multi Media Interface.  For a premium sound experience, the Bang & Olufsen stereo with 19 channels, 19 speakers and more than 1,400 watts of power creates a wall of sound that will bring your music to life like never before.

Other impressive features include a rear seat entertainment system with dual 10-inch screens, DVD player, ambient lighting, heated front seats, Alcantara leather, and 18-way power seats.  A panorama sunroof sits above, as does a solar sunroof that converts sunlight into electricity and powers a ventilator bringing a constant stream of fresh air to the cabin.

When it comes to safety, the 2011 Audi A8 is a cut above the rest.  Eight airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system with traction control come standard in the all-aluminum frame.  A blind spot warning system, lane departure warning system, and night vision system are available.  Adaptive cruise control detects impending collisions and initiates full braking to soften the impact of an unavoidable collision.
